Preparing for Detox

Ho, Ho, Ho GCS lovers! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, and family time holiday! We had a great time with our family and friends, and it's been absolutely DIVINE to have a real vacation from work and school.

As I mentioned in my last post, I have set out to use Mark Hyman's "The Detox Box" for a 7-day detox beginning the first week of January. (I'm actually still debating on beginning on January 1 or 2, because I have a feeling tomorrow will bring a bit of a headache that may need a greasy sausage biscuit... if you catch my drift!)

Either way, I have begun preparing both my kitchen and myself for detox. Here are a few of the easy steps I have taken, that you can also begin today!

1. While I have stuck with my morning cup of coffee, I have eliminated Diet Cokes from my diet (save for that one I had at the movies the other night... but one in a week is a huge improvement for me!).

I'm pretty sure that the caffeine detox is going to be the toughest part for me. Actually, I'd put money on the fact that this may be the cause of a few recent breakouts, honestly. However, I am working part-time this week and don't have class, so I may be taking a few cat naps. Mark Hyman's plan suggests napping!

2. I've stocked up on my supplies from our local Trader Joes.

For those of you with a Trader Joes nearby, I STRONGLY suggest going there first, before Whole Foods. While I do love my WF, Trader Joes had several of the supplies I needed for a good price AND in a convenient, ready-to-cook fashion. Their frozen organic brown rice is going to be a life-saver--- who has 2 hours to cook brown rice? Mark Hyman may not appreciate this method, but I'm a working gal with time to budget, so I deemed this ok! I also picked up a few of my supplements there for a great price. I've still got to get one or two supplements from WF, but I saved a bundle by hitting up TJ's first!

3. I've set aside space in my fridge, freezer, and on my counter for "my" supplies.

While my husband will inevitably be subject to a few vegan/gluten free/alcohol free/dairy free dinners, I can't subject the poor guy to the entire detox without him being willing (and let me tell you, nothing is going to get that man to give up Bud Light and a good turkey sandwich). So, I have made two shelves in the fridge and a corner on our counter for me to keep my food items, supplements, herbal teas, etc. That way I don't even have to open our pantry or rifle through our fridge and be tempted by the Doritos, grits, Triscuits, cheese, wine, etc. By keeping tunnel vision on my three little spaces, I eliminate a bit of temptation.

4. I've begun to lightly incorporate a few detox-esque changes to my diet already.

Nothing huge, but just to get my body used to, ahem, a vegetable after a 2-week bender of sausage cheese balls, wine, beer, vodka, bourbon, fried fish, cupcakes, biscuits, cheese straws, casseroles, grits, bacon, and fried oysters (Don't give me that face- I'm from the South). I have begun taking some of the supplements and am currently sipping on my breakfast smoothie of strawberries, ground flax seed, flax oil, chia seeds (not on Mark Hyman's plan, but they are great!), spinach, coconut milk, Vitamin C Powder, and Greek yogurt. This isn't technically the detox smoothie, but it's a heck of a lot better than Frosted Mini Wheats and gets my body used to what's ahead.

5. I've dusted off the ole yoga mat.

I've also created a space in my house where I can literally have an entire room to myself, with great natural light (the sunlight kind, not the beer!), to have my DVD and yoga area. I've got a few other workout videos (thanks to a co-worker) and an exercise ball and resistance band. This creates a space in our house entirely dedicated to me and my relaxation which is amazing!

Ok, so Happy New Years Eve to all! Enjoy the evening, and I look forward to detoxing with you come tomorrow!

Detoxing for Good Clean Skin in the New Year!

Hello, GCS Readers! Please excuse my recent extended absence. A semester of Quantitative Methods and Financial Accounting had me under a bit of an academic rock. Let me tell you something else- it also had me totally stressed, messed up my entire exercise routine, and threw me for a good five pound weight gain. I know, I know- there is no good excuse for not exercising, drinking a Thursday night martini with classmates, and eating mini-twix bars for dinner. But let me tell you, getting up at 5 am to exercise, then working a full day, and then sitting in Financial Accounting until 9 pm without caffeine or chocolate- it's harder than you think!

All this to say, my skin has had it's own reaction to all this imbalance, and it has not been pretty. Blotchy coloring, rashing around the eyes, pimples on the jawline, dry spots and greasy spots. It got bad pretty fast, and unlike me, I let it go for far too long.

If you've read many of my previous posts, you know that I believe strongly in an "inside out" beauty routine. Your skin will mirror your lifestyle, and don't let any dermatologist tell you otherwise. Smokers, heavy drinkers, tanning bed lovers, overweight ladies-- your skin will show this long before you'd like for it to!

So, I've decided to get back to basics and go "Modified Paleo" for a while. I've recently ordered a few books from Amazon to help me- including a few from one of my favorite healthy book authors, Mark Hyman, PhD. I have purchased his "The Detox Box" and am looking forward to starting out my January with a good, healthy, NORMAL detox. No- this is not a "eat lemon rinds and drink strange asparagus juice for 2 weeks to lose 28 pounds" detox. This is a true, yoga-doing, healthy-eating, no alcohol, no caffeine detox and I am DETERMINED to do it right!

So, over the month of January, I'll be periodically discussing the effect this has on my skin. And, if the holiday over-indulgence has you feeling a bit puffy and pimply, perhaps you'll join me?! I'd love to have others try this with me and post about the effect it has on their skin, as well!

The Buzz on BB

Happy October, Good Clean Skin Lovers!

Unless you've been hiding under a rock these last few months, by now you've heard of BB Cream. Actually, this post has been a long time coming, as I had been planning on trying some BB Creams all summer, and then time got away from me.You may not have tried it yet (it took me a while to come around to the idea, myself) but you've at least seen the ads and commercials. So, what's the buzz?

BB Cream (which stands for beauty balm here in the Western part of the world) is a recent import to the beauty market from our Eastern friends and is touted as an "all-in-one" miracle cream claiming to be the replacement for moisturizer, make up primer, sunblock, and foundation. In other words, it's tinted moisturizer on steroids. Now, this may seem like a super new idea, but the concept actually dates back to a 1960s German dermatologist who was seeking a healing balm for her patients after mild surgical procedures. Of course, it's been perfected over the last several decades, and now wham! Thank you 2012, BB Cream has made it to America, and in a big way.

Almost every tried and true skin care and cosmetics brand has got a BB Cream by now, and the drug store brands weren't far behind (though I haven't tried it, I've seen the ads for Garnier's BB Cream, and the price tag is great!).

So- should you put a BB Cream in your make up bag? The answer is yes. For all you 5 am morning gym goers, busy moms on the go, working girls who skip lunch breaks to run errands-- this beauty product is for you. It's the busy woman's make up... and I've yet to meet a woman who isn't busy! I wear it alone on a day-to-day basis, or you can also use it as a primer for other make up if you're getting a bit more dolled up.

Now, which ones to try? Here are my current favorites, but I can't claim to have tried every BB Cream out there, so please post suggestions!

1. boscia's BB Cream SPF 27 PA++- This might be my favorite, but I'm also a tad partial to boscia's products because they paraben, sulfate, dyes and fragrance free, etc. Aka- they leave out all the things I can't pronounce, and that seems to make good clean sense! This BB Cream seems to give me a really nice natural look, which I like. And, for $38, this isn't a bank breaker, either.
2. stila's Stay All Day 10-In-1 HD Beauty Balm- Maybe it's because I came of age in the 90s, but stila has always been a favorite beauty line for me, and I love being able to find them at Sephora. stila's BB cream is great, and it's light weight, and it comes in a pretty tube. Like boscia's cream, this too is free of all things hard to pronounce, and it's $38 a tube. It seems to give me a little more "glow" than the boscia cream, and has a great light reflecting quality on my skin.

3. Dr. Jart's Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 PA++- I haven't tried this one yet, but it's next on my list because I've been reading all good things. It was a totalbeauty.com winner for 2012, and has gotten other great reviews, too. Apparently this is good for those of us drier-skin gals, and I like the added SPF, too! A great plus for those of us with fair skin. (When I do try it, I'll make sure to post!) This is $39, so like the others, right in that $40 range, which isn't too bad!

Have you tried any of these? Good results? Great results from some other BB Cream? Let me know!

Wednesday's Deals & Steals

Happy Wednesday, GCS lovers! I've got some great deals for you today, in the hopes that you will forgive me for my spotty posting lately. (I've just started Evening MBA school, so I've been a little nuts!)

However, here is your chance to stock up on four fabulous brands, all at a fabulous price. I've included how to get the discount (in some instances you may have to click a banner to get directly into the site), the coupon code (if there is one) and also products from each brand that you may want to try, if you're new to the brand.

Happy Shopping!

Why you'll love Clarins: Other than the wonderful feeling of buying a bottle with French all over it (Ok, I can't help it, who doesn't love to feel European!?), Clarins is a good line for those of you who want to specifically target certain issues. Their HydroQuench line is one of the best for Dry Skin that I've ever used- I love the Cream Gel and the Mask. For those of you with very sensitive skin, don't pass up the Skin Beauty Repair Concentrate. It's $60, but I promise you'll thank me after just one use!

Why you'll love Jurlique: This is a new product line favorite for me, and their Calendula Cream is currently in my beauty bag as a great after-sun moisturizer for summer. Jurlique's products are natural, and they are great for sensitive skin. They operate their own 153-acre farm in order to maintain the quality of their ingredients.

Products to try: Calendula Cream, Purely Bright Cleanser, Soothing Herbal Recovery Gel

Philosophy

The deal: A free 27 Wishes Multi Purpose Skin Nurturing Balm when you spend $35 or more with code MYWISH.

Why you'll love Philosophy: A cult favorite with great packaging, Philosophy's body wash products are in glamour girls showers all over the world. Their products smell good, feel good, and work well. While I'm not as versed in their skin care, I have been a long time lover of their signature scent Amazing Grace. A clean, happy scent that will instantly brighten your mood and leave your boyfriend thinking that you "just always smell good"!

Products to try: Their new Hope in a Jar is hot off the press, and I'm curious for a sample. However, my favorites from this line include their fabulous smelling body washes and lotions. Amazing Grace products are also on the list to try!

The Dreaded Painful Pimple

Hello again, skin care lovers! I apologize for my recent break, but in the last few weeks my husband and I have sold our home, purchased (or are in the process of purchasing) a new one, have been raising a beagle puppy, and I've been studying for the GMAT. Needless to say, our household has been fairly chaotic. Yours truly has been under some serious stress and my diet, exercise, and skin care routines have all taken a hit.

So it shouldn't have been a surprise to me at all that when I woke up yesterday- and there it was. The Dreaded Painful Pimple. Right on the bridge of my nose. Oh, it hurt something terrible! Even the most devoted skin care pro can't avoid the occasional painful pimple. Stress, hormones, diet, getting off schedule- it can all add up. And sometimes, it will add up right on the bridge of your nose. Grrr.

So, what was a girl to do? Well, the first AND MOST IMPORTANT rule of Dreaded Painful Pimples (DPP) is simple- DON'T try to pop it! More often than not, you can avoid ever seeing (though unfortunately not feeling) one of these little buggers. If you leave it alone, it's quite possible that it will go away on it's own, never even breaking the skin.

Secondly, heat up your water (either by faucet, or in a stovetop pan) and using a wash cloth, make a warm compress that you apply gently to the DPP. Don't scald the poor thing! Don't try to burn it off your face. Just use tolerable, warm water and a clean washcloth. 10-15 seconds per application, and then give it a few seconds of air before applying the heat again.

Lastly, don't overload it with creams, potions, and drying agents. We all know what flaky, irritated skin looks like, and it's not pretty. You've already got a pimple, no need to dry out your skin like the Sahara. Use a gentle anti-zit cream (I like Mario Badescu's Anti-Acne Serum) and apply a thin layer to the DPP, and the area around it, after you wash with your regular cleanser. Don't forget to follow with a moisturizer! You will need it to help keep your skin in balance.

A few days of this treatment, and you should notice it begin to abate. And, in the meantime, drink lots of water and try to bring your stress levels down with some yoga, walking, or relaxation time!

Kate Middleton's Beauty Secrets

It should probably be said that I absolutely adore Princess Kate Middleton. I do. I have a printed picture of her on the side of my computer at the office. I got up at 3 am to watch the royal wedding. I buy any magazine with her face on the cover. And I am, of course, quite curious about her beauty routine! So, when you've got photographers watching your every move, how do you stay flawless?! Here are some princess-tested, media approved secrets. (And a few articles for your reading pleasure, to boot!)

Karin Herzog Skin Care Products

Ever a woman of the people, Kate is reported to be a Karin Herzog devotee. Now, there is a fairly nice price tag to this line, but it's not the most expensive line out there, so I'm impressed that Kate is using a good line that (for someone who just inherited a comfy $10 million) is actually quite mid-range in price.

Products to try? Oxygen Face Cream (only $44) and Essential Mask ($50)

Kerastase Hair Products

If you tell me you don't envy Kate Middleton's gorgeous hair, you're lying. Perhaps the most famous head of hair on the planet, Kate often wears her hair long and flowing. Now, she also pays good money for blow outs up to 4 times a week, not including special occasions (isn't every day a special occasion when you're Kate Middleton!?) which most of us common folk can't afford. However, to keep her hair in tip top shape on her own, she's rumored to use Kerastase Hair Products, which are pretty easy to find right here in the US of A! Visit their website, linked above, and shop by your hair concerns- dry, oily, color-treated, etc.

Bobbi Brown

A popular make up line on both sides of the pond, Kate reportedly stocks up on her basics at cult-favorite Bobbi Brown. Stateside, you can find Bobbi Brown in most high-end department stores. I've been a long-time fan on the line and used their make up products on my wedding day, as well!

Products to try? Creamy Concealer Kit ($32) and a Shimmer Brick ($39) (mine's in Rose, but Bronze would do well for summer time!)

And, if you're like me, and you just can't get enough Princess Kate, here are a few articles all about her beauty secrets to help distract you during your workday! Enjoy!

Back by popular demand- Lauren Conrad's DIY Microdermabrasion

This is by far my most-read post to date, so I'm pulling it from the archives for those of you who are new to good clean skin! Enjoy!

Recently, I ran across a recipe for a "do-it-yourself" microdermabrasion on Pinterest that claimed to be from one of my favorites, Miss Lauren Conrad herself. So of course, I had to try it!

Now, before we go into the recipe and the results, let me just say that technically microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment that works to reduce acne scars, discoloration, fine lines, and other imperfections with the use of a mechanical tool and some type of solution. It is a non-surgical procedure that abrades less deeply than it's more intense cousin, the dermabrasion. While the two processes do have some similarities, the recovery time on a microdermabrasion is much less, making it more popular with people who are looking for an instant pick me up and brighter skin. I have to admit, I have never had a professional microdermabrasion, as I have sensitive skin and was recommended to stay away from them by my facialist. So, if anyone has any stories they would like to comment, please do!

I have, however, used over-the-counter "microdermabrasion" products, which give ok results but are a bit of a mis-nomer. Basically, these products are using this term as a marketing strategy, as the popularity of the microdermabrasion has grown significantly in the last few years. It does not mean these products won't work for you, it just means that more than anything, you are really getting more of a strong exfoliation instead of a real microdermabrasion.

But, I digress. Let's get to Lauren Conrad, shall we?!

So, here's her recipe. It's very simple. 3 parts baking soda, 1 part water. I had to play with this a bit to really get a good paste, but you'll know when you've found it. Don't go too overboard on the water, as you really are looking for a paste that you can pick up with your fingers and use as a scrub.

So, once you have your paste, apply it to a clean face (one that has been rinsed of make up) and start gently scrubbing in a circular motion. Keep adding the paste as needed, until you have really given yourself a good scrub of your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin, as well as the the entire jaw line, which can be prone to blemishes and is often ignored. Rinse with warm water.

I didn't notice huge results (this will not eliminate fine lines or discolorations), but I will say, my skin felt nice and soft and very clean. Also, I had a bit of a dry spot on my chin, and I probably should have avoided scrubbing that area, as too much scrubbing on a sensitive patch can lead to redness. But, it didn't seem to be bothersome.

All in all, I will try this again. Not bad to have on hand if you need a little pick me up before bed or if you are out of your regular exfoliating scrubs. And of course, the price tag is lovely!

Hey, Baby!

Last night, an old friend and I got to catch up over the phone, and she told me that she is expecting again! Wahoo! So, in honor of her impending delivery, I decided to give a little shout out to the soon-to-be-mamas out there with a few products guaranteed to make your pregnancy skin, or babies new skin, as healthy as it can possibly be.

When you're pregnant or nursing, your body is going through some major hormonal changes, and you may begin to notice some not-so-lovely side effects of your wonderful new bundle. Skin texture can change, and stretch marks may appear. It's absolutely imperative to take the best care of yourself and your skin during these nine months, so that your after baby skin will be just as glowing as your before baby skin! Not to mention that spending a little time each day will help to relax you, which is important!

So, while I was cruising this great new website I've found, www.DermStore.com, I found a few great products for moms-to-be! Even better, using promotional code REMINDER will get you 10% off your order, and a free subscription (without auto renewal) to Better Homes and Gardens or Fitness Magazines.

1. Mama Mio Congratulations Kit- This may be my new gift at every baby shower. A great 3 piece kit with shower cream, body cream, and tummy oil for helping to prevent stretch marks, from a brand that has some great mom-centered skin products.

2. La Roche-Posay Lipikar Body Milk- This is one of those products the whole family will love. Scentless and non-greasy, it's good for husbands and children, as well as expecting moms who can't seem to stomach the stronger scents of other lotions and creams. I love La Roche-Posay's sunscreen, so while I've never tried this stuff, I imagine it must be good!

3. beginning by Maclaren 100 Percent Pure Essential Oil- Yes, this is the same brand that sparked the high-end stroller phenomenon. They've now got a line of mom-and-baby products, as well! beginning is a great line of products, and this particular product is nice because it comes in Orange, Patchouli, and Lavender scents. For the mom in need of relaxation, put a few drops of Lavender in some warm water, and allow the scent to steam and fill the house with a relaxing, slumber-inducing scent. Or, if you're still feeling that first-trimester exhaustion, use the Orange oil to help perk you up and give you a bit of energy- since you can't have that Diet Coke!

4. Anything from the brand Episencial- Most of this brand is targeted to children, but I was a sucker for the darling Eric Carle graphics from The Very Hungry Caterpillar on the bottles. Try the Peaceful Bubbles or Snuggly Lotion for a happy, healthy baby!

5. Belli Acne Control Spot Treatment- Because you'll have to swear off many of your prescription and non-prescription anti-acne products for at least nine months, if not longer, Belli has created this fabulous little product that you can actually use during pregnancy, to help keep any hormone-induced acne flare ups under control. Tea Tree Oil, a natural anti-septic, helps to fight off bacteria, in the place of ingredients like glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, which should all be avoided during pregnancy.

So, I hope you enjoy some of these great products, and this website. Here's to a beautiful nine months!

Tuesday's Beauty Steal

Recently, I took advantage of the 25% off private sale at Jurlique, a new brand that I've discovered and of which I am quickly becoming a huge fan. I purchased the Purely Bright Cleanser, and while it says it's not for sensitive skin, my skin adores this stuff and I've seen nothing but improvement since last week, when I began to use it. I also nabbed a full-size tube of their Calendula Cream, which is a fantastic moisturizer for summer and is great for after-sun use. Jurlique's all natural line seems to agree with my skin, so I'm looking forward to trying other products from their brand.

So, you can imagine how excited I was to find their Herbal Recovery Gel is on sale, down from $48 to only $29 when you use this link and enter offer code SECRET.

Enjoy, and if you've tried this brand, I'd love to know what you think!

The 10 Rules of "Popping"

"Popping" zits is never a good idea. Let me totally clear about that before we go any further. Because your fingernails and skin contain bacteria, when you smash them together with fairly strong force, you're actually pushing bacteria into the pores around the pore that you may be hoping to relieve. And, picking is the number one way to cause scarring. However, sometimes there is just that ONE-LITTLE-ZIT that you absolutely must get before you leave for work/walk out the door/let your husband leave to play golf. I'm guilty of it, too!

Zits happen, no matter how careful you are or how strict you are with your skin care routine. "Zits", another term for whiteheads, happen when a pore is clogged and pus fills within the pore. When the pore is closed at the top, the pus does not reach air, and therefore does not become oxidized like it's cousin the blackhead, it will remain white, and typically grow to be larger and, sometimes, more painful. Gross, I know, so we'll move along.

But when you find yourself in a "must get it now jam" what should you do? Well, if you absolutely must pop, here are the rules.

1. Get a facial, and ask for "extractions."

I know, not the most time friendly answer here. But like many other things, popping pimples truly is better left up to the pros. Professional aestheticians have the right tools and products to help ease pimples from your pores in both a gentle and sanitary manner. They also have the right products to help soothe your skin afterwords. Not to mention, they are using gloves, a strong light to help them see, and likely a sterile needle to help relieve one pore at a time. DO NOT try using a needle at home. Seriously. Bad idea.

Extractions aren't the most relaxing part of a facial, but they are a great way to help skin that is broken out or inflamed. Some spas even let you book an appointment for just extractions, without the facial part. I have done this several times, and just having extractions done can take much less time and cost way less money. Some places only charge about $10 or $15 dollars, and require little advance appointment time, because they only take about 10-15 minutes.

2. Don't be Pringles- once you pop, stop.

If you're like me, you see one spot on your nose, lean in to see it more closely in the mirror, and suddenly start noticing other little issues. You started by just picking one little pimple, and suddenly you've spent 45 minutes tearing at your face, much to the chagrin of your husband/little brother/older sister or whoever else is trying to get into the bathroom. So, unless red splotchy is the look you are going for, when you see one pimple, just pop that one. Don't keep going. If a blemish is too small to see while you are standing normally at your bathroom mirror, guess what? No one else will see it! Honestly. It will be much less noticeable than if you try to "get it" before it's ready to come out, and it's likely to go away on it's own with good, regular care.

3. Only pop a pimple on a clean face.

Because your face, hands, and fingernails are covered in bacteria, it's better if you wash all the surfaces involved before you start trying to pop anything. And, often times, a good exfoliating scrub will actually work to remove the culprit. Use some warm water (not scalding) and washcloth, and see if you can't simply remove the pimple with a little gentle, washcloth scrubbing. This can get rid of the zit, and mean a much quicker healing time, and lower the risk of scarring.

4. Wash again when you're done.

Once you've popped your one zit, give your face a second, gentle wash with a light cleanser, and apply a topical treatment from there, either prescription or something like Mario Badescu's Anti-Acne Serum.

5. Pop at night.

Because our skin heals more rapidly as we sleep, and because popping will cause you to be blotchy, it's best to pop only at night, when you can then apply some healing product and hit the hay. One of my favorites- Mario Badescu's Drying Lotion. If you put this on a blemish at night, it will work wonders by morning. Double bonus- having your imperfection covered up while you watch some late night TV or hang around the house in your jammies makes you less likely to continue to pick at it. Of course, your husband/roommate/little brother might laugh at you, but heck, it's worth it for clear skin the next morning!

6. Use your knuckles.

If a pimple is so stubborn that it cannot be removed with your knuckles, you are best to leave it alone! Your knuckles have less bacteria on them and are less sharp than your fingernails, helping to keep scarring to a minimum. So, instead of going after a zit with your fingers, use your knuckles!

7. Know what you're after.

Whiteheads in your t-zone (the t-shaped space of your forehead, nose, and chin), especially in the creases of your nose, are often easier to pop, and leave less redness, than pimples on your cheeks. Only pop whiteheads that are raised, non-painful, and that do not require much work to remove. Cystic acne, or deep painful, sore pimples, SHOULD NEVER be popped. Nor should you try to pop blackheads, as they may pop, but they can leave you blotchy. Seek the help of a professional if you are hoping to clear up cystic acne, and instead of trying to pop it, just use good skin care and cover up until you can see a facialist.

8. Love the steam.

I often suggest steam as a free, easy, at home way to clear up your skin. Why? Because it works, and it costs $0. Wash your face while you put a pot of water on to gently boil on your stove top. Never steam a face with make up or that has not been freshly washed. Then, once steam is being let off by the boiling water, gently and carefully lean over and let the steam hit your face. Don't get too close- you'll burn yourself. Just get close enough to the steam to feel a gentle waft of warmth. A few minutes of steam, and your pores will be nice and opened up, meaning a more stubborn pore may be less stubborn when you are done!

9. Mask it.

Using a mask once a week can help you not only prevent pimples, it can help dry up the ones you have, without the use of dirty, damaging fingers. By using a mask, like Mario Badescu's Drying Mask or Flower and Tonic Mask, you'll help clear your skin without scarring or leaving any redness. I suggest using a mask at least once, if not twice, a week to help prevent breakouts, but it's also a great tool to use as a spot treatment on specific areas that need attention.

10. Find a good concealer.

Sometimes, you just need to wear a little concealer until the blemish goes away. Pimples happen to everyone, and it's best to cover them up and leave them alone. Find a great concealer, like Bobbi Brown's, and look flawless until a blemish heals, or until you can get in to see your favorite facialist.

Blackheads

Back last summer, I posted this as one of my very first GCS blog posts. Because it's important to go back to basics once in a while, I'm pulling this one from the archives!

Even those with the clearest skin are prone to blackheads. Look carefully in the crease and on the bridge of your nose and on the flat of your chin. For those of you blessed with small pores, you may have to use the bright lights and mirror in your bathroom. Normally, blackheads are much easier to see on a man's skin, as they tend to have larger pores. However, almost everyone is prone to blackheads. The medical term for a blackhead is open comedo.

A quick medical description, found on About.com, is this: "Blackheads, also known as open comedones, are follicles that have a wider than normal opening. They are filled with plugs of sebum and sloughed-off cells and have undergone a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation of melanin. This gives the material in the follicle the typical black color."

Below is an image (not of my own nose) for those of you who  may be questioning exactly what a blackhead looks like.

Unfortunately, blackheads tend to be rather stubborn little devils. You can try to squeeze them, and often they will "pop" in rather gross, curly little spirals. However, popping does more damage than good. Though I am guilty of it from time to time, it's a terrible habit and can lead to long term scarring. Your best bet for blackhead removal? It's a three step process. First, a good exfoliation should help. Secondly, Mario Badescu (one of my favorite skin care brands) has a wonderful product to help clear blackheads. It's called Silver Powder, and it's good stuff. You'll feel a bit strange as you are using it at first, but you'll see a noticable difference. Lastly, don't skimp on moisturizer just because you have blackheads. Moisturizer is an important step in your skin care process and your skin will dry up like prune without it.

Beauty Musts & Beauty Busts- Sunscreen

Ah, summertime. I just spent a heavenly weekend beachside in Nags Head, NC this past Memorial Day Weekend, armed with a few drug-store snatched sunscreens that I grabbed in a hurry as I jetted out the door. Packing up a beagle, a beagle puppy, a husband, and my vast array of beachy beauty supplies is no small task- but I probably should have budgeted a bit more time to researching good sunscreens. After all, what kind of skin care guru doesn't do her homework?

So, you can imagine my delight as I sipped my sweet tea vodka and flipped open my brand new Town & Country Magazine (a personal fave!) to find an entire article dedicated to top sunscreen picks for the season. My homework, done for me! The article, entitled Sultans of Soleil, pays homage to my vintage favorite Bain de Soleil, before it dives into six other recommendations, thankfully all of which offer a bit more SPF than the Bain's mild 4!

Speaking of SPF (which stands for Sun Protection Factor), I was interested to learn that this summer the FDA's new sunscreen regulation will finally come into effect.
"The maximum SPF you're going to be able to buy is SPF 50+ and companies will no longer be able to use the words sunblock, sweatproof, or waterproof" says L'Oreal Paris consulting dermatologist Gervaise Gerstner. (Town and Country, June/July 2012)
I very much suggest picking up a hard copy of the magazine for yourself (because there are other great articles- one about la prairie's new spa at the newly revamped Hotel Bel Air- be still my heart! A $1,000 facial! My CPA husband would keel over!) but I'll also list a few of their recommendations here, for your convenience. To find the others, and to get the skinny on why each one was selected, you'll have to snag your own copy!

Beauty Musts & Beauty Busts- Eye Creams

Eye cream is important. There are some products that you can skimp on, and some you can get away without using all together, but I assure you, eye cream is not one of them. It is actually one facial product where I recommend a splurge, if you can afford it. Why? Because sensitive eye skin needs special care. The skin around your eyes is more delicate, which is why you'll notice things like discoloration and wrinkles there before you notice it on other areas of your face.

And, let me be totally honest, eye cream is not just for Granny. YOU need eye cream. Women of all ages can benefit from adding a good, high quality eye cream to their beauty regimen. However, picking an eye cream can be tough. Your age, your personal issues (crow's feet, dark circles, etc), and your budget are all things you'll want to take into consideration before picking an eye cream. So, below I have listed some Musts and Busts in the hopes that you'll be able to find an eye cream that works for you, without burning through too much of your skin care budget!

MUSTS

1. My personal favorite- Mario Badescu Special Eye Cream V

This is my "best overall" eye cream. For $18 for a container, this eye cream is one of the most affordable creams I have ever found, and it's got a great consistency- not too greasy, not too watery. You'll like this eye cream, and you'll love the price!

2. Best for mature skin- Cosmedix Opti Crystal Chirally Correct Eye Serum

Regardless of your age, this eye cream is FAB-U-LOUS. I love this stuff, and it's from a great brand, Cosmedix. This is perhaps my favorite product from this line, but at $90.00, it's not the most affordable eye cream out there. However, I'm including it on my "musts" list, because it is worth every penny! Great for crow's feet and dark circles, best for dry skin around the eyes.

3. Best for dark circles- StriVectin-SD Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles

StriVectin has long been a go-to for women who fight dark circles. While this concentrate has replaced the original "StriVection for Dark Circles" cream, it will still help with under eye darkness. And, at around $60 for a tube, it's a good mid-range price point.

BUSTS

1. Rollerball Rip-Off-  Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Eye Serum

A few years ago, the rollerball phenomenon hit the eye skin care market, and made quite a splash. And at $210 for this little tube, what we have here is a rollerball rip off, in my opinion! Rollerballs are popular, but it's important to know that rollerball products contain a serum, and not a thicker cream. I like rollerballs in the summer time, when dry skin isn't as much of an issue, because when you keep them in your refrigerator, they feel fantastic on tired, sun soaked eyes. But you don't need to spend $210, Clinique's All About Eyes Serum Rollerball is a great little eye serum and will only set you back $26 at your local department store. Stick it in your butter or dairy bin in your fridge, and enjoy a cooling eye gel all summer long!

2. Patchy Business- Guerlain Super Aqua-Eye Anti-Puffiness/Soothing Eye Patch

Let's put it this way. You can spend $117 on these little eye patches, or you can spend $1.50 on a nice hot house cucumber in the produce aisle and spend a little time horizontal on your couch. Take your pick.

3. Money, Money, Money- Any product over $200

Call me conservative, but I just can't justify spending over $200 on half an ounce of eye cream. I know that some of these creams probably work, but so do the creams under that price. If you've got money to spend- try the Opti Crystal Eye Serum from Cosmedix, listed above. Of course, if you've tried an over-the-top expensive cream, and you swear by it, let me know!

Beauty Musts & Beauty Busts- Gadgets

Let's face it. There are a lot of expensive beauty products out there promising to cure your skin ailments. And, you've probably wasted some hard earned cash on products or gadgets that didn't work. It's frustrating, to say the least. So, in this next series, "Beauty Musts & Beauty Busts", I'll be sorting through common beauty products to help you decide where it's worth splurging, and when it's worth saving. If you have recommendations, I hope you'll list them below in a comment. I'd love to check out what products have been successful... or those that weren't!

First up, beauty gadgets. Gadgets are expensive, make no bones about it. Because they are more of an investment than your regular wash, mask, or cream, it's important to know that a beauty gadget is worth it before you invest. So, let's take a look at two popular beauty gadgets- the Clarisonic Classic Sonic Skin Care System and the Zeno Hot Spot Acne Clearing Device.

The Clarisonic Classic Sonic Skin Care System will run you about $195, definitely not a decision you want to make lightly. The Zeno Hot Spot Acne Clearing Device will set you back only about $45. You can find both products at ULTA, a great spot for online beauty shopping. So, which product is worth the investment, and which can you pass up? Here are the results...

Beauty Must- The Clarisonic Classic Sonic Skin Care System

This Clarisonic wonder-brush might be expensive, but it's worth it. And, don't be fooled by impostor brushes either, I've tried them, and they honestly don't achieve the same results. I can't exactly tell you what it is about the Clarisonic system that makes it so fabulous, but once you've used one of these little babies, you will be hooked. Your skin will feel cleaner, tighter, and smoother after just two weeks of consistent use. Use it in conjunction with whatever favorite face wash you've been using, and I promise you'll see a noticeable difference in your skin tone and clarity. I have actually seen great results with the Clarisonic brush and my good ole standby Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser! Especially good if you have oily skin, because the Deep Pore Cleansing Brush Head (purchased separately) will give you oily gals a fantastic deep wash. This brush technology comes from the makers of the SonicCare toothbrush, which I think is pretty neat! So, while it might be an investment, it's definitely one worth the splurge.

Beauty Bust- Zeno Hot Spot Acne Clearing Device

I wish I could recommend this little product, because honestly, the theory is good. A blast of concentrated heat at a controlled temperature to help blast away pimples. In theory, this should be a great product, because gentle heat is one of the best treatment plans for unsightly pimples. Unfortunately, you can achieve the exact same results with a stainless steel spoon, a clean washcloth, and a pot of hot water. Start by heating up a pot of hot water, and allowing yourself to lean gently over the pot to steam your face and open your pores, and then take a stainless steel spoon and submerge it in the hot water. Don't leave it in there long, and make sure when you pull it out that it is not too hot for your skin. Then, LIGHTLY press the round, underside part of the spoon to your blemish. I must note- be CAREFUL. Try the spoon on the top of your hand first. Don't burn yourself. You aren't trying to scald the poor blemish off your beautiful face, you're trying to loosen the bacteria and gunk that has your pore clogged with a gentle application of heat. So, this is truly a case of less is more. If you are too timid to use the spoon, use the washcloth in the same way. Dip the washcloth in the hot water, and then gently apply a compress to your blemish. This method (and the Zeno device) both work better on those stubborn, painful, icky pimples instead of your typical whitehead. (However, the steaming treatment suggested at the beginning of this exercise is great for all skin types and all kinds of blemishes!)

Now tell me, what gadgets have you tried?

Paint by Numbers

If you've had a lot of professional facial treatments, then you may have experienced a mask or product applied by the use of a brush, likely a fan-style brush. It feels pretty neat, and it's a great way to apply masks because the mask can be applied very evenly, and it's very relaxing. Also, because your fingers and hands contain natural oils, a brush is a very clean and gentle way to apply a mask. For those with sensitive skin- take note!

Of course, the best part about using this brush technique is that it's easily done at home, and as a matter of fact, I find a brush to be a great way to apply facial treatments that you've made yourself. It saves your hands from getting drippy and gooey, and honestly, I have to admit, it feels fantastic (and very spa-like!) to have a mask brushed onto your clean, bare face, even if you have to do it yourself!

A brush can also be a great way to apply some of the pure oil facials that I mentioned in previous posts, like the Sweet Almond Oil Facial or the Olive Oil Facial.

A few important suggestions for using a brush:

1. Brush gently- there is no need to be heavy handed!
2. Clean your brushes after each use.
3. Brush in sweeping, circular motions.
5. Brush thin layers on, don't use too much mask for your brush, or your soon lose the feeling of the bristles!

I recommend getting a high-quality brush, if you decide to purchase one. You are going to be using it on a most important canvas, after all! These can run you anywhere between $5-$15 a brush, and there's no need to spend more than that. Also keep in mind that because you are brushing this on your skin, cleaning the brush carefully after each use is very important, so that you don't have a brush full of bacteria!

Pucker Up, Buttercup!

Your lips. Are they plump? Thin? Kissable? Cracked? Lips get a lot of press in the beauty industry (likely because they also have a great deal of sex appeal) but what does it really take to get a gorgeous pout?

To cut out a great deal of anatomy, lips are not just the skin covering your mouth. The skin surrounding your lips and then the actual lip itself is different, and more sensitive, than other areas on your face. While your facial skin can have up to sixteen cellular layers, your lips only have around four. Your lips do not have sweat glands or hair, and therefore do not get the protection of naturally made body oils and moisture that hair follicles and sweat provide. Yes, those two things are serving a higher purpose than just stray brows and pimples, I promise!

Because of it's natural thinness and unprotected nature, lips are more likely to dry out than other areas of your skin, which is why the skin care and cosmetics industry has come up with thousands, if not millions, of products for you to perfect your pout.

But what actually works?

As you might imagine, I've tried a lot of products out there in the hopes of achieving soft, kissable lips.I've tried lip exfoliation, plumper, moisturizer, glosser, stain, stick.... ah, the list goes on. Because I have dry skin, and because I like to spend a lot of time outside, my lips are prone to being  chapped and dry. But it wasn't until a recent couples fly-fishing trip out west, that I found a true gem of a product, and for the bargain price of around $2.50 a tube.

Because fisherman are exposed to the sun, and also the reflection of sun from the water, they are forced to find good, strong, sunscreen packed lip protection. Enter Simms by Dermatone Angler Lip Protection, SPF 30. This little tube helped keep my lips soft the entire time we were out west, and is now my beach/golf/running bag staple for outdoor lip protection all summer long. You can find it online at almost any fly-fishing outfitter website. I haven't stumbled upon it in stores here on the east coast, but my introduction to this little beauty wonder came at a little spot called Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, Montana.

So do yourself a favor, and order up an entire case. Share it with your dad, brother, mom, sister, best friend, tennis partner. This might just be the one beauty product that your husband/dad/fiance/son/brother tries to steal from your purse!

good clean skin is on Pinterest!

Because I can't resist the pull of Pinterest, I've created a good clean skin board where I'll post quick bits about good skin care from other great sources. I hope you'll follow me, and share your pins with me, as well!

Sweet Almond Oil Facial

Welcome back, skin care loving readers! I apologize for my month-long hiatus, but was recently the chair of a large charity event here in town, and so have been one busy lady these last few weeks. I promise not to go that long again without a post!

Of course, being busy tends to mean three things for all of us- first, we get out of our normal routines, secondly, we start to lose precious hours of sleep, and last, but not least, we begin to suffer from stress. Now, if you've been reading my blog with any regularity, you'll know that I find both routine and sleep to be crucial to good skin care, and that I have always said that any kind of stress (job, family, money, etc) will cause your entire body to react with physical aversion. Your stomach flips, your skin breaks out, your eyes twitch. Bodies don't like stress, it's a fact.

So, I have dedicated these next few days to taking extra good care of myself, and of my skin, in the hopes that I will soon look more rested and revived! So, first up on my list, and I have recommended this before, was a Sweet Almond Oil Facial. This is a quick and easy facial that, for those of you with dry skin, could become a weekly staple. For those of you with acne prone skin- don't shy away from this! The word "oil" may seem like a bad thing, but in fact, it will help sooth any redness and irritation that you may have had from breakouts, and I think that just about everyone will enjoy a more even skin tone after a few tries! Truly, this is a great and inexpensive fix!

So... here is the recipe. Get yourself a bottle of Aura Cacia Skin Care Oil at your nearest Whole Foods Market. Spend a little time choosing your oil, as there are several kinds. I like the Sweet Almond Oil, because I tend to have really dry skin, but if you are more acne prone, you may try the Grapeseed or Jojoba Oils. If you don't have the time, or money, for the store- then try Olive Oil! Yep, good ole EVOO will do the trick, as well.

Next, go home, and pour a half-dollar size puddle into your palm, and give your clean face a nice slathering. No, I'm not kidding. Just rub the oil right up on your face, all by itself. Seriously, don't give me that look, go ahead and give yourself a gentle rub. No need to be forceful about it, a gentle patting will do just fine. Then, wait for 10 minutes or so, and wash the oil off with a cleanser and warm water. (If you really want to get serious about it, have yourself a cup of hot herbal tea while you wait.) You may need to use a washcloth to help remove the oil, as well.

I think you'll notice an immediate and remarkable difference in your skin's softness, and after a few tries, your skin tone. Let me know if you've tried other oil types, I'd like to hear from you!

Natural Beauty at Home

I don't usually pass my readers off on other skin care websites, I do try hard to consolidate information so that you can get the information you need in a nice, one-stop spot. However, this little gem was just too good to keep to myself. I'm not sure if any of you have stumbled upon this website yet, but I found this link on, what else, Pinterest, and had to share.

This website, Homemade Beauty Recipes, has a recipe for just about any piece of skin and any ailment that you might have. It even has baby skin and hair treatment recipes! I just found this website yesterday, so I have yet to whip up these concoctions, but the ingredients seem very legitimate- lots of good oils, avocados, cucumbers, milk, and honey mentions- and having given this a good once over, the recipes seem to be in line with other at-home remedies I have tried before. Nutmeg to clear pimples, avocado to moisturize (and hold a mask together), milk & honey to calm redness.

I will recommend, when you start out with at-home beauty recipes, try not to go overboard. You can spend a lot of money buying the supplies and ingredients to some of these concoctions. I try to stick with recipes that can be made with things I already have at home- herbs, milk, olive oil, honey, eggs, etc. If you decide that at-home and/or natural beauty is working for you, then you can try more detailed recipes- ones that include essential oils, carrier oils, and other hard-to-find ingredients. DO be careful if you begin to work with essential oils, and never use them undiluted. Follow instructions, and do not try to find these "on the cheap". Essential oils are great, but only when used correctly and bought from a reputable source (like Whole Foods).

Here are some of the recipes that I plan to try this week:

Pimple Zapper
Ingredients:
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp milk

Instructions:
Mix the ingredients together and apply to pimple. Can be washed off after 20 minutes or apply before bed and rinse in am.

Egg White Facial mask

Ingredients:

One egg white, whipped

Instructions:

Whip the egg white slightly. Apply to face and allow to dry, then rinse well. Great for tightening pores!

Fruity Alpha Hydroxy Acid facial peel
Ingredients:
1 tbs Strawberry juice
2 tbs orange juice
1 tbs whole milk

Instructions:

Combine ingredients. Apply to a clean face with tips of fingers.  Allow to dry for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with warm water.  Similar results of a facial peel.

Oatmeal/Almond Scrub

Ingredients:

2 tbs ground oatmeal or ground almonds (GCS Note: I think I'll include both, just for kicks, as I have dry skin.)

Instructions:

Use oatmeal for normal skin and almonds for dry skin. Cleanse in a circular motion then rinse with warm water.

Enjoy! And, if you try one of these (or the others), let me know how it works for you, and if you'd recommend it!

Is your allergy medicine drying out your skin?

Ah, spring! The weather is changing, the clocks have sprung forward, and the bees are buzzing around newly blossomed flowers. Sounds heavenly, right? Well, perhaps not if you suffer from seasonal allergies, a common ailment this time of year.

Often miserable allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes will motivate us to take an over-the-counter medication, like Benedryl, Zyrtec, or Claritin. These medications can do wonders for helping you to rid yourself of the annoying sneezes and runny nose*, but while they are drying out your nose, they may also be drying out your skin. Some mild acne sufferers have claimed that their allergy medicine helped clear their skin, but more often than not, dryness will actually make acne or other skin issues much worse.

So, before you head to the allergy aisle at your local drug store, make sure that while you are taking an allergy medicine, that you are also drinking a LOT of water and staying very well hydrated. Of course, I always suggest water as the number one go-to beverage, but coconut water and beverages like Gatorade can also be nice supplements. (Not only will staying hydrated help keep your skin supple, it will help to loosen any yucky yuck in your nose and chest. Seriously, ask any Mom you know!)

Lastly, and this is important, what most people don't know is that while pollen, grass, and dust can certainly cause nasal allergies, they can just as easily cause rashes, hives, and skin allergies as well.

Anytime that you begin to notice these symptoms, it's crucial to make an appointment with an allergist or dermatologist, ASAP! These may be simple allergies, or they may be a symptom of something more serious, like a food allergy. Don't try to self treat at home, see a professional!

1. Rashing around your eyes or mouth.
2. Hives, wheels, or other raised itchy patches anywhere on your skin.
3. Itchy, red, or irritated skin anywhere on your body that lasts over 12 hours.

*As I am most certainly not a doctor, do consult a physician or pharmacists before taking these medications in conjunction with other medications you may already be taking. Certainly make sure to double check the labels, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
